# Order-Level Staff and Commissions

Every order can have staff assigned to the whole order, separately from any staff tagged to individual lines. This guide is about what happens to commission on a line that has **no staff of its own** — whether it falls back to the order's staff, or earns nothing at all.

## The default: order-level staff catch unattributed lines

Out of the box, **Apply commission to order-level staff** is turned on. With it on:

- A line with its own staff pays commission to that staff, on their own rate — order-level staff earn nothing extra on that line.
- A line with **no** staff of its own falls back to whoever is assigned to the order, splitting the store's default rate across them the same way an untouched line-level assignment would.

This is the forgiving default — a cashier who forgets to tag a line still has commission land somewhere sensible, on whoever was working the order.

## Turning it off: only explicit line staff earn commission

If you'd rather commission only ever go to staff someone deliberately tagged to a line, turn **Apply commission to order-level staff** off. With it off:

- A line with no staff of its own earns **no commission for anyone** — not the order-level staff, not anyone else.
- Order-level staff assignment still works for everything else it's used for (order attribution, staff performance reporting) — this switch only affects the commission fallback.

This is the stricter setting, useful if you want commission numbers that only ever reflect a deliberate tag, never a default.

Changing this switch applies to new orders right away. An order that's still **unpaid** and gets edited afterward is re-checked against the current setting the next time it syncs. An order whose commission has already been **paid out** is never touched — its history stays exactly as it was, regardless of which way you set this switch afterward.
